Catalogue Note

The ship that is depicted is the ‘Amsterdam II’, acquired in 1887 by the NASM (Nederlandsch-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij), renamed in 1896 to the ‘Holland America Line’. The ship mainly sailed on the line from Rotterdam to New York. The Statue of Liberty, seen in the background, was erected eleven years before the creation of the present painting.
